ON AFRICAN CHILD DAY 2012, ART SCOUT OFFERS FREE ART EDUCATION FOR THE LESS PRIVILEGED KIDS

Meet the artists at the ART SCOUT’s art training which was held in Ashabaala village with the pupils of STAR FOUNDATION MISSION SCHOOL to commemorate the 2012 AFRICAN CHILD DAY. The seven (7) volunteers that graced the event were Olusegun Adeniyi, Olumide Morenikeji, Olanrewaju Tejuosho, Olusoji Sunday, Bukola Lawal, Offiong Daniel, and Adeoye da-Costa. Remembering the brave South African youth, who rose up on June 16, 1976, and helped change their nation and the world. This year, we stood for FREE ART EDUCATION with ART SCOUT on AFRICAN CHILD DAY… For all of us in the ART SCOUT team, Art is more of a bigger calling, ART for SOCIAL CHANGE. We are so passionate about art and affecting the world positively with our artistic prowess and dexterity. That was what brought us together, that was the bonding. We take FREE ART EDUCATION to the less privilege kids in the villages and other remote areas in the country but this was a unique experience. The African Child Day presented us another chance to touch the lives of the kids at the rural areas. The project was to complement what the management of STAR FOUNDATION MISSION SCHOOL has been doing for some years with the poor kids of Ashabaala village and environs, FREE EDUCATION! We had a wonderful moment with the kids, exchanging art as a gift of HOPE with the kids, and we hope they grow up to impact a change in their world… we are AMBASSADORS of HOPE using ART as a tool. COLLAGE PAPER BALLS FROM RECYCLED MATERIALS BY AFRICAN KIDS

…Imagine a recycled collage ball with signature of a young African kid adorning your corporate office or the reception of headquarter of the world football governing body, FIFA? This is a project for change, the power of football outside the pitch, a great opportunity to impact positively the lives of the kids from impoverished areas, kids that have little or no access to art education and quality recreational activities. Not every child will get the chance to kick the round leather ball but give them the chance to create one. The process of creating the RECYCLED COLLAGE BALLS is tending to be a springboard for socio-economic change. Let’s embrace it! “It is this passion for football that enables it to have a broader impact on the lives of millions around the world, particularly children. Football and the FIFA World Cup can promote improved health and education for the world’s children, prevention of HIV/Aids and, yes, a child’s right to recreation.” Kofi Annan • Former UN Secretary-General We will like to seek for support from organizations, corporate bodies, and individuals to provide art education for the less privileged kids. We will be visiting the rural areas to give the chance to participate in a history making project with the less privileged kids. We will be creating the balls from papers and recycled materials (product used posters). It will strictly be made from paper and larger than the usual round leather ball. The intent for this project is to build environmental art projects with the less privileged kids to increase eco-awareness, nurture creativity, strengthen community engagement and participatory in global sport. Your sponsorship will mean supporting African children involvement in global sport and using football to promote social development. HAND PRINTED DESIGNS ON FABRIC

Adire textile material adorned with hand printed African designs is considered to be a priceless piece of art. The hand printed design with Adire background is a viable work of art that preserve and promote our cultural heritage and art. Textile making is a branch of the applied art that has to do with utility, but this particular art piece could adorn the wall of our home just like the paintings, serving just aesthetics purpose. The process entails dyeing the fabric first to add a colourful background then it is embellished with the hand printed designs. MATERIALS Mesh and the chemicals, sensitizers and bicomate, Fabric (Adire fabric or white fabric to be dyed), Colour (Opaque ink or textile ink), Squeegee, Black permanent marker and pencil and Engine oil THE PROCESS STEP 1: Prepare your background in a dye solution, by dipping the fabric. You allow it to dry before proceeding to printing. STEP 2: Make your design on a typing paper, like the A4 sheet using pencil. Then trace it out with a black permanent marker or black ink. STEP 3: Apply engine oil on the paper and rob it with foam until you can see through (a transparent effect) STEP 4: Prepare your mesh with the sensitizers and bicomate in a dark room. You wait until it is dried and transfer the design on it through the heat transfer from the Sun, and then wash it in a bowl of water after 2 minutes. STEP 5: You do the printing by placing the mesh on the fabric, pour the colour inside the mesh and spread with squeegee. STEP 6: You repeated this process until you cover your intended covering spaces. MODEL:The students of Badagry Junior Grammar School, Badagry, Lagos, Nigeria.
